Renovation of Eau Rouge

One of the most significant modifications concerned the world-famous Eau Rouge/Raidillon corner combination, where many accidents had occurred in the past. In 2022, the run-off area was significantly enlarged and gravel traps were added at six corners on the Formula 1 circuit: La Source, Radillion, Blanchimont, Les Combes, Stavelot, and Pouhon.

Appointment in Brussels

Early in the morning, we got in the car and headed to Brussels for a meeting at the headquarters of the main contractor, Wust-Serbi. They were responsible for the entire construction of the new grandstand. After some tough negotiations, we agreed that Holland Sport Systems would become the proud supplier of grandstand seats for what is perhaps the world's most famous combination of turns.

Type of grandstand seats

Due to the low and special grandstand elements, we had a unique position because these seats are raised to 13 cm. This allowed the grandstand seats to be mounted directly on the concrete without the need for additional (expensive) raised brackets. The type of grandstand seat chosen is the HSS-V. (4600 pieces)

10,000 holes drilled

To complete the whole thing, the numbering had to be applied, of course. However, the requirement was that it had to be secured with screws so that fans would not take the numbering with them. (something that happens a lot). Because this is not a standard option, we (Jos Martens and Nils Toonen) had to drill almost 10,000 holes and fasten 10,000 screws for 4,600 seats. It was a nice job that took a total of 3.5 days!
